Goodbye, Hello.

If you are brave enough to say goodbye, life will reward you with a new hello.
— Paulo Coelho

My relationship with alcohol had put me in a numbed world where I had become complacent in its comfortable darkness.

I was deep in this realm and far from being brave enough to say goodbye to it. The climb out seemed too steep, too scary. A part of me understood, though, that if I kept walking the same well-worn trail, I would figuratively and literally die there.

Even when I was at my lowest point with alcohol, lost in that dark inner forest, I knew there was a clearing somewhere and that it was up to me to reach it.

There was a more ancient and wiser part of me calling out. It was like a Knowing or a Voice that had the insight to which my egoic mind wasn’t aware.

I had to learn to listen and trust this other part of me that I had shut out for so long. Trusting it wasn’t easy, and still isn’t, to be perfectly honest. Although this voice, this guide, is earning my trust as it brings me to new clearings and higher ground.

I think this voice isn’t separate from me; it is a part of me, just as it is a part of you. It is a superpower that humans have, and by listening to it, we can be the hero our story requires.

There are many terms used to describe whatever the hell I am talking about here, but the words we use to describe it aren’t important. What is of the utmost importance is whether or not we will listen and act.

Each individual’s calling or path will be different. It could look like letting go of booze, a lover, a religion, or a job. This is no small task, especially when we have interwoven our entire identity amongst these things.

Having the courage to question who and where we are and then leave it behind— if necessary—can shake us to the core. It can also lead us to a more authentic inner domain where deep wisdom and insights can occur.

That voice within knows that you are “brave enough to say goodbye.” When you make that first step past the threshold into the unknown, you will get the reward of a “new hello.”

I know that you are capable. You know that you are capable.

Get after it!
