Connecting with Our Inner Parts
We all have childhood wounding and scars to deal with. You may think your issues are no big deal compared to what others have gone through. Don’t get into the comparison game with these matters. Your issues are uniquely your own to work through and process.
These parts can exhibit a wide range of emotions when we connect with them. Whatever comes up, approach it with curiosity, self-compassion, and acceptance. Get weird with it and give it a shot.
Another writing exercise is what I have been calling a ‘bitch and burn.’ When I feel different aspects of myself getting triggered and coming online, I write out their perspectives in a bullet point style. All sides of the issue are welcomed, and whatever thoughts come forth get written down.
I burn the paper once all points of view have been expressed. This is done in a more ritual sense as I will offer up a prayer of sorts honoring and acknowledging what has been said. The paper and the flames then become symbolic of releasing those emotions.
If you want to do some deep trauma work, I highly recommend you seek out the care of a trained professional. If you want to go deeper into parts work, use the IFS institute directory. In it, there are listed all IFS-trained therapists in your state.
This work can be overwhelming at times. It can cast a light on dark aspects. It shows us parts we have repressed. It uncovers the depths. But, I believe that connecting to the myriad cast of characters within can be an excellent tool for self-discovery in helping you move forward and map the path to your meaningful life.
