Wherever You Are in Your Sober Journey Is Okay.
The journey to freedom from alcohol can be, at times, one of immense difficulty. We quickly discover that it is not a straight path of progression but a meandering adventure through unfamiliar territory.
You might be walking amid blooming flowers of insight only to be caught in a gray fog of apathy that stops you cold or basking in the rays of tranquility one day, only to be overwhelmed by a raging river of urges the next.
For years I didn’t think it was okay to be angry or depressed or discontent. I shamed myself repeatedly for having these feelings. I still find myself regularly in these states of mind, but not long ago, I realized it was okay to have them and explore them.
I have to remind myself that this is just where I am and that it is ok to be there.
When, on your alcohol-free path, you find yourself in these locations—these ‘negative’ states of mind— remember that it does not mean you are broken, nor does it invalidate what you have learned or how far you have journeyed.
Know that it is ok to sit there for as long as you need to. Know that it is ok to reach out to other travelers for help.
Know, as with all journeys, you will eventually pack up and take the next step, and wherever that next step takes you is okay too.
