From Numb to Knowing

Day 2

Today, you’ll discover which “protector parts” may be influencing your drinking and learn to recognize their motivations. By building on the awareness you gained in Day 1, you’ll begin identifying the internal voices urging you to drink and practice meeting them with understanding and gratitude.

Key Points from Day 2:

  • IFS Reminder: Every part of you serves a purpose, and none of them are “bad” or trying to sabotage you.

  • Protector Parts: These parts step in to shield you from discomfort, stress, loneliness, or painful memories.

  • Behind the Protector: Often, a more vulnerable part underlies the urge, prompting the protector to “put out the fire” with alcohol.

  • Reflection Exercise: Observe a recent urge to drink, identify the protector part’s voice, and notice how it responds to gratitude.

  • Today’s Worksheet: Helps you identify and name these protector parts, revealing the deeper need they’re trying to meet.
